Alexander Isak Injury Major Blow to Liverpool’s Title Defence

Following his £125m move to Liverpool at the end of the transfer window, most fans would have expected Alexander Isak to have scored lots of goals for his new club by Christmas. As it is, though, the Swede has a mere three, two in the league plus another in the EFL Cup.

A lack of goals does not mean that the striker’s enforced absence will be a trivial one for Liverpool, though. With Isak out for a lengthy period, it leaves Arne Slot light upfront, with Hugo Ekitike the only natural fit for the position.

With many fixtures yet to come, especially during this time of year, how will Liverpool fare without Isak and might it trigger some movement from Liverpool in the transfer window?

Fenway Sports Group to Sell Major Sports Team… Could Liverpool Be Next?

Love them or hate them, Fenway Sports Group (FSG) are very good at what they do.

They acquire what they consider to be under-valued sports teams, invest (to a point) and then sell for a considerable profit once they have been able to instigate a marked improvement in fortunes.

It was revealed in December that FSG plan to sell the NHL franchise that they own, the Pittsburgh Penguins, to a consortium led by American entrepreneur David Hoffmann.

The price? A cool $1.7 billion (£1.27 billion).

It was back in 2021 that Fenway acquired the Penguins for £672 million, so even account for the money they have invested in the franchise, the group still walks away with a considerable profit on their ledger.

By the time you’re reading this, Alexander Isak may or may not be a Liverpool FC player.

The Newcastle striker is doing his best to fashion a move to Merseyside, releasing all manner of public statements which suggest that there’s no way back for him on Tyneside.

Arne Slot is interested in signing the Swede, with rumours suggesting that an initial £110 million bid was rejected. It remains to be seen whether the Reds return with an improved offer before the transfer window metaphorically slams shut.

If Isak doesn’t join, Slot may turn his attentions elsewhere – his squad does appear a little light on attacking talent ahead of a quest for more success domestically and on the continent.

All of which would increase Liverpool’s transfer spending in the summer of 2025 yet further… and that has already broken all previous records.

It was with great sadness that we learned of the passing of Joey Jones in July 2025.

In many ways, he was the perfect embodiment of Liverpool FC – Jones supported the club as a boy and frequently stood on the Kop, later getting the Liverbird tattooed on his arm.

He would come through the youth ranks at Wrexham, another club at which he is revered as an icon, before switching to Liverpool in 1975 in a £115,000 deal sanctioned by Bob Paisley.

In a season full of new highs, Liverpool have broken the transfer record for a fee paid by a Premier League club.

They will shell out a cool £116 million for Florian Wirtz, with only Philippe Coutinho’s switch from Anfield to Barcelona commanding a higher fee in a deal involving a Premier League side.

The secret to success in football, of course, is scoring goals… and lots of them.

So while quantity is king, there’s also plenty to be said for quality, too – football, at its best, can be something of an art form.

There’s a handful of different awards given out at the end of the campaign to anoint the scorer of the best goal; ranging from the Premier League Goal of the Season to the BBC Goal of the Season, as well as the Puskas Award.

The likes of Terry McDermott, Ray Kennedy and John Aldridge all won the BBC’s award, handed out in conjunction with Match of the Day, prior to the First Division being rebranded as the Premier League, with Dietmar Hamann, Steven Gerrard, Emre Can and Mo Salah getting the nod since the 1992/93 campaign.

But only three Liverpool players, as of the end of the 2024/25 campaign, have ever won the official Premier League Goal of the Season trophy. Can you name them?
