As the manager rightly pointed out, Liverpool had beaten an in-form Arsenal side with only a handful of moments of concern, and really the Sky Sports pundit should have been praising the Reds for a ‘champion’s performance’ in turning around a one-goal deficit.
There was a joyfulness in Liverpool’s play in their 7-2 win over Lincoln City in the EFL Cup on Thursday night that was a pleasure to behold. In between incisive passing and creative interchanges came goals for Curtis Jones (x2), Takumi Minamino (x2), Xherdan Shaqiri, Divock Origi and Marko Grujic, and a number of those were strikes of the highest order.
For a game that most expected to be a stern test of Liverpool’s credentials as far as retaining the Premier League title is concerned, the 2-0 win over Chelsea was anything but. Of course, the sending off of Andreas Christensen on the stroke of half-time helped, but let’s be honest: the Reds were well in control throughout, and it seemed only a matter of time before the breakthrough would come.
Wow….now that’s how you start the new season off! Okay, so fans of robust defensive football will not have been impressed with Liverpool’s 4-3 win over Leeds United, but for those who enjoy the unparalleled entertainment that an end-to-end game provides will have been in raptures as the action unfolded at Anfield.
A nod to the glory days of yesteryear, this time around both Liverpool and Leeds United fans can enjoy this fixture without the need to turn to nostalgia. The Reds start their Premier League title defence against the Yorkshire outfit – it’s been a long time since we’ve been able to write those words, and despite a quiet summer on the transfer front the hope is that Liverpool will be there or thereabouts come the end of the 2020/21 campaign.
It would be fair to say that Merseyside was well and truly red on Wednesday night. From the fireworks that peppered the night sky to the sea of red shirts in Liverpool city centre, this was a title-winning celebration of extraordinary emotion given the backdrop of the coronavirus pandemic and the long, long wait Reds fans have had to wait to see their side win the league.
It would be an understatement to suggest that July has been below par for Liverpool. Now that was more like it. The fear after a series of insipid performances of late was that Liverpool’s history-making season was just going to fizzle out into something of an anti-climax following the coronavirus disruption.
